How to Make the Perfect Espresso? Tips & Tricks for Your Grinder & Portafilter

A good espresso is more than just a pick-me-up – it's pure passion in a small cup. With the right techniques for your grinder and portafilter, you can get the best out of your beans. Here are a few professional tips for enjoying espresso at home:

1. The Right Bean and Freshness

Freshly roasted beans make the biggest difference. Make sure the beans are no older than 3–4 weeks and grind them just before preparation.

2. Adjusting the Grind Size

Your grinder is key. For espresso, you need a fine, almost powdery grind size. Too coarse = watery, too fine = bitter. Experiment slowly and note down your settings – every bean reacts differently.

3. Dosing & Tamping

For a standard espresso, you should use about 18–20g of coffee grounds in the portafilter (for a double espresso). Press the coffee grounds evenly and with consistent pressure – about 15 kg of pressure is ideal. Even tamping ensures even extraction.

4. Water Temperature & Extraction Time

Optimal water temperature is approximately 92–96 °C. A double espresso should extract in 25–30 seconds. If it flows too fast, the grind is too coarse; if it takes longer, it's too fine.

5. Regular Maintenance

Clean your grinder, portafilter, and brew group regularly. Old coffee residues affect the taste and can clog the machine.

With these tips, you can make espresso at home that tastes almost like it came from a barista. Practice makes perfect – experiment with beans, grind size, and tamping pressure until you find your perfect cup.
